Form 2290 in August: The Heavy Use Tax Deadline Nobody Can Afford to Miss

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, filed on IRS Form 2290, applies to every highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax period runs July 1 through June 30, and for most carriers the payment is due August 31.

Why does this matter so much? Because your stamped Schedule 1 is required to register or renew plates in virtually every state. No Schedule 1, no IRP renewal, no new plates — the truck sits.

The filing itself is quick when done electronically: VIN, taxable gross weight category, first-used month. E-file returns the stamped Schedule 1 within hours, versus weeks by paper.

Common mistakes we fix every August: wrong VINs (file a VIN correction, free), wrong weight class after a trailer change, and suspended vehicles (Category W) filed as taxable. If you put a new truck into service mid-year, the 2290 is due the last day of the following month — a deadline almost everyone forgets.

We e-file 2290s the same business day and email you the stamped Schedule 1 ready for the DMV.
